Heirloom Insurance

Part 1

Technology has brought with it immense amounts of convenience and skill. I am still old enough to remember very clearly and vividly when smartphones became a thing. My first phone I got when I was thirteen, it was a flip phone. It had a camera on it that, at the time, I thought was amazing and took pictures worthy of being my screensaver. That same time was when I would record song audio on the voice memo app so that I could have the theme song from Twilight as my grainy ringtone that sounded like someone was trying to play it through a plastic bag in a car wash! Basically, technology has been a blessing and has brought so much more precision and clarity to so many things in our daily lives. One of these things is a camera.

Needless to say, we have pretty decent image quality through the cameras on our phones, and they are continuing to improve. So, why even hire a professional photographer when you can take the pictures on your phone? You can take their prom photos on your phone, their senior pictures. A friend can go out to the parkway and get a couple of good shots of you and yours that you fall in love with and post. Sure; these are all things that can be done. What is the quality of that image? Does it ever make it out of your phone onto a wall, into a frame, onto a calendar? Are those the images that become heirlooms and memories for you down the road, the ones you took on your phone?

No, the professional photographs that you took an afternoon to go do are the ones that make it onto the wall, that make it into the photo album, that give you those feelings of joy for more than just a couple of weeks after you posted your cute parkway picture. Why? Well, that is what this blog is all about; why having a professional photographer take professional pictures with professional equipment is worth it.

In preparing for this piece, I made sure to do my research. Now, I did go to school for photography so I had quite a bit of background information about the topic. Of course, this is also a topic I feel passionately about; so, I wanted to make sure that you don’t just have to take my word for it but you can see what others have said as well.

I was reading up on why professional photography is worth it and I came across this article on what this photographer says when people ask if it’s worth it and worth the money. It was very interesting to me to see that her answer was a story about Superstorm Sandy in 2012. She recalls how as she was packing her car up to prepare for evacuation, she looked around at her neighbors and saw that they weren’t packing their “stuff”, the computers, the chargers, the TV’s, the pretty bowls and decor. No, they were packing up albums and pictures taken right of the wall. They were saving their memories. When they were uncertain of what they would return to from their home, they made certain to take with them their pictures, the memories that brought them back in time and would do so also for their family down the line. So those images that you are debating if you should get taken by a professional, those could be the ones that you treasure so dearly and that keep that time in your life alive. Images worth saving!

In reflecting and doing research, I was also reminded that we save what is important to us and we capture what is important to us. That’s why birthdays, graduations, holidays, weddings, anniversaries, trips, they are all captured and we would save those images if we thought they would exist no longer. Photography provides us to show others and remind ourselves what is important to us. Through the process of doing a shoot, we are able to express ourselves and our vision of that moment. I say we because, I as a photographer get to be expressive and you, as the subject, get to display your own artistic representation of that theme. Whether it be the clothes you wear, the makeup or hair that you style, even the facial expressions and body language portrayed, you are expressing yourself through that art form. It also has the power to move us. Photographs can inspire action, emotion, and verbalization of what you think is going on in that photograph. This is so powerful because a photograph can take you into that moment.
